2007 Season

posted October 9, 2007

Aloha everyone,

So sorry it has taken me this long to get this email out to you. I have been deep into my "paying" job and have been extra busy trying to make $$$. I wanted to thank all of you for a wonderful season. Big mahalo's to our signature sponsors, Kaanapali beach resort association and the Hawaii tourism authority. Their support and belief in our mission statement helps to sustain our association.

Mahalo's should also go out to all of you who took that extra step up to get involved in the planning of our events. Special thanks to Alex of Hawaiian xtreme, without his on-going support we would not get the media coverage we had. Mahalo also to Ropati from Pacific Paddler. Please take note gang, without these two men, we would not have any media coverage, no media, means no sponsors, which means no money! We owe so many people our gratitude, Momi, Tim and Rose, Amy,  Gloria, Kendall, Matt, Alan Faye, Nakoa, Uncle Mike, Boomer, Keola, Kirk and Rae, Kimi, our escort boat captains, Jerry from Kualoa, Loren Shim, Brandee, Donnie, and so many more. Everyone of these people made the difference between a good season and a bad one. I sincerely appreciated all the help and encouragement. The work it takes to make a season happen starts months before a race, and I can honestly tell you, without them and so many others, it just wouldn't get done. From my heart, deep in my heart, I thank them.

To all of our members, I thank you for your participation and loyalty. As a group we did more community service this season then I could have dreamed of. For me, this is what it is about. Giving back and sharing. I am not sure where we are as far as what lies ahead for the HSCA. But, as long as we have the desire, and people who are willing to help, my hope is we enjoy another 20 years as a ohana.

In closing, congratulations to Marvin Otsuji for winning the overall series. He not only won the series, but he won EVERY race we held this year. In addition, he introduced over 20 new people to the sport. The 2007 win is his 8th consecutive series win. AWESOME!

I guess this is it gangie for the season. We will be holding a board of directors meeting the first part of January. Every board position is open, so if you are interested, please let me know. I will send out an email to notify everyone of the date, time and location the closer we get.

I wish you all a safe, happy, and fun rest of 2007 and thank you for allowing me the honor of being your President.

Much love and Aloha,
Terry

Aloha Gang,

Just a few more days until we kick off our 20th race season as an association.

I am looking forward to returning to the Big island and want to send out a big Mahalo to Tim, Rose, Amy, Ray and Boomer, for all their hard work and efforts on the Big island and Maui. What they have been able to pull off is no small task. Because we will be in remote areas, all the food, supplies (even porta potties)  have to be brought in by trucks. Tim and Amy have spent over a year lobbying to the necessary people on the Big island to get the permits which will allow us to leave our canoes over-night in Keokea. The Big island police department will be on hand to watch over the canoes Friday night. Momi worked her magic to secure all the needed insurance and other permits which we need in order to stage a successful season.

I am also happy that several holopuni's will be meeting us in Hana and doing the second leg of the event with us. Our escort boats will be the Hawaiian cats. We all feel safer knowing Uncle Kirk and his fleet will be out there with us.

A reminder, the board did away with membership and insurance fee's and have made it easier for you to rotate crews without the expense of having to pay for each new member. There is one fee for each event. $420.00 per canoe, per event.

For those of you who have not heard, I am sad to report Tui Tonga was hit by a drunk driver while on the trailer the night before she was to be shipped to the Big island. THANK-GOD noone was hurt, sadly however, the canoe was damaged and is now in dry dock being repaired so she can meet us in Maui for the June event. I know I can speak on behalf of all of you in sending Captain Donnie our aloha, our canoes do have life and when something like this happens it hurts everyone. We will miss seeing Tui and her crew at the first event.  Since Tui will not be at the first event, I have decided to present The "Mark Brewer" award to one of YOU in June at the Kaanapali beach hotel dinner. Normally this award is given at the first race, but..it seems dis-respectful to honor Brewer when Tui, his beloved canoe, isn't there!

20 years! How amazing is that? The HSCA has a lot to be grateful for. Uncle Mike started this association with the mission to "learn, revive, educate and practice those ancient Hawaiian skills and values as they relate to the Hawaiian sailing canoe and the Hawaiian culture" here we are 20 years later fulfilling his vision. None of this would be possible without of all of you, our 2007 sponsors; The Hawaii Tourism Authority and Kaanapali Beach resort Association.  Hawaiian xtreme sports will be on hand during the season to film and produce a 20th anniversary documentary on the HSCA. Mahalo to Alex from Hawaiian xtreme sports, and Ropati from Pacific Paddler who have stood by us even during the "no money" years! Thanks to their dedication to the hsca, our sport, and culture, we have always been able to get our mission out there to the masses! I ask that you keep our sponsors and supporters in mind, when you do business that may benefit them.

I am also happy to tell you our good friend Greg Davidge, the photographer who shot the insane photo's of us from a helicopter in 2000, will be on hand for a few events to once again document our journeys from the skies! His photo's will be posted on our site and will be for sale.

When you go to our site, www.hsca.biz, you will notice we have changed a few races. We will be going to Kualoa this season, and I would like to thank Jerry and Matt from the Koaloa regional park,  for allowing us the opportunity to land our canoes in a spot which has such an incredible cultural significance, especially for the sailing canoes. Na holo Kai will end this year in Nawiliwili, this is where the first Na holo Kai ended and the birth of the HSCA began 2 years later! There are several race courses that have been cut shorter so that the 4-mans and Holopuni's can join us.

As I close this email, I want to thank all of you, our sponsors, supporters and the hsca board for stepping up and making the 20th anniversary the best season ever. We are planning some big surprises for our participates. I look forward to seeing all of you.

Aloha gang,

The 20th season of the HSCA will begin soon. We do have a few changes.

1 - We are happy to say our season will begin on the Big island.

2 - The 2007 Na holo Kai will end in Nawiliwili.

3- The 2007 Kendall pacific will end in Hanalei.

4- We will once again be going to Molokai.

5 - The board is looking at starting a California Chapter within the next month or so.  Dave Wong and John Dutton will be the California liaisons.

6 - The Board voted to do away with separate Entry, membership,  and insurance fee's. We are going with one flat fee for each event. The flat fee will be $420.00 per canoe.

This breaks down to $70.00 per person for the 6mans and $105.00 for the 4mans. The fee will be the same for both 6 and 4 mans so that we can have a deticated escort boat for the 4mans. The captain will give one check for their canoe to the island delegate the event is on. It will be up to the captain to collect the fee's for his or her crew. The board felt by going to one flat fee for each race, would help the captains in being able to sail with new crews without having to worry about membership fee's.

7 - We are proud that Brandee Faria has agreed to join our board as the HSCA legal counsel.

8 - The Mark Brewer award will be given at the second event which will be Kaanapali. Please send me any and all stories about what you all have been doing in regards to the sailing canoe during the off-season.

9 - The HSCA will again pay for a one way shipping  (up to $150.00). In order to get this shipping paid, you need to race the entire season. When you go to ship your canoe, please remember to reserve a MIXED FLATRACK.

We are proud and happy to announce our 2007 sponsors will once again be the Hawaii Tourism Authority and Kaanapali Beach resort association. You can get the entire season schedule by going to our web-site at www.hsca.biz

The HSCA board is very excited about the 2007 season, especially since we will be celebrating our 20th anniversary. We are planning a lot of special things for the members.

I look forward to seeing everyone.
