Last email of the season

Aloha everyone, Like me, I am sure you will be happy to know this will be our final mass email for the 2006 season.

I want to personally thank the board of directors for all their hard work and efforts. Our participation this season was the best ever and it would not have been that way had the board not worked as a team. Each island delegate executed the boards plan and I am proud to say they did it flawlessly. Momi, Cappy, Nakoa, Matt, Marvin, Kendall, Ray and Tim worked non-stop on issues such as permitting, insurance, logistics and so much more. Keep in mind gang, although the race season is pau..the board works year round to plan, execute, and follow-up. Our last race was Sept 9th...the board is already discussing and making plans for 2007. No-one on our board recieves any type of monetary rewards, they do it simply for the love of our mission.

Our media efforts were a HUGE success, big mahalos to Ropati of Pacific Paddler for making sure we were represented in every issue and believing in us. Alex of Hawaiian extreme sports TV for his work in making sure our mission statement was put into video footage and continues to be shown not only locally, but nationally. Starting in October, Hawaiian airlines will begin to show a 10 minute segment on the HSCA on all their in-flight videos on Hawaii bound flights. It will air for 8 weeks.

Mahalo nui loa to our signature sponsors, The Hawaii Tourism Authority and Kaanapali Beach Resort Association. I believe we proved that the HSCA can form and strengthen visitor relationships and create experiences for both our state visitors and our community. Without their support and funding we would have never been able to afford the type of media we recived and will be getting through-out 2006. Their continued support is IMPERATIVE in order for us to continue to spread our mission statement and fulfill our agendas. They believed in us.

Mahalo to Nick and Kendall for bringing the Holopuni division in, we hope for 2007 to have a 4-man Hawaiian canoe division join us as well.

Our goal for 2007 is to begin our season back on the Big island, and go to Hana, Kahalui, Kaanapali, Molokai, Kaneohe, Haleiwa and end in Kauai. I hope to have the schedule set by Jan 2007. Funding and permitting will determine all of this happening.

It is time to go back to weekend camping and shorter races with Na holo kai being the big daddy of them all. The shorter races will allow more participation from the Holopunis and the 4-man Hawaiian sailing canoes.

I have turned in our 2007 grant proposal to the HTA and we should hear something before the end of the year. When the board sits down to set the final schedule, we will do our best to accommodate all the big outrigger races and try hard not to over-lap. I ask that you keep in mind that the HSCA has our own agenda, our own mission statement and our own commitments to you and our sponsors. Sadly, sometimes we have to make a choice and set our priorities, our agenda will always come first.

Thanks to several HSCA members, 2007 will be the year we will have a HSCA chapter in Southern California. These members just had their first fun run and their first race is planned next month. Check out the web-site for photos.

I sincerely thank you for my "end of the season" gift. I LOVE IT and have already hung it proudly in my home. I especially loved my "Queenie sea hag" sash and will wear it proudly at our first event in 2007!

I want to remind you all to please remember our mission statement "to learn, revive, practice, educate and teach the ancient Hawaiian skills and values as it relates to the Hawaiian sailing canoe and the culture" Although our season is pau, the mission should be practiced year round. Those of you who have sailing canoes, use them, play on them, do good with them and share your stories of the off season. The Mark Brewer award is given at the beginning of the season to the person who best demonstrates their efforts to continue to spread our mission statement.

IN closing, congratulations to Marvin and his crew for another season victory! 2007 will be the 20th anniversary of the HSCA as a non-profit organization. I am sure Donnie, and others are coming after you for that season victory, and if I know you Marv, that makes you happy!

I look forward to another incredible season and wish you all a happy "off season". Please email me any of your off season adventures so we can put them on the web-site.

Mahalo nui to all of you who participated, took that extra step to help out, Mahalo to all of you who donated to our "causes" such as Noah, Joe and Fausta. My heart is filled with love for all of you and for now..A HUI HOU!

California Sailing

Califonia Sailing

On 8/26/06, history was made with the first ever gathering and racing of Hawaiian outrigger sailing canoes in California. Like the early hana butter days of the Hawaiian Sailing Canoe Association, anytime you get a bunch of friends/sailors together, there is always competition. The course ran from Long Beach to Newport Beach with 4 canoes in the water. The course was a distance of a little over twenty miles. Everyone involved had a great time and we were all winners.

The results are as follows:

Everyone came in first for the most fun.

See you on the water and keep canoe sailing safe! Aloha

(KHNL) - As members of the Hawaiian Sailing Canoe Association make final preparations for Saturday's 100 mile race to Kauai, they have a more important journey on their minds.

A Haleiwa woman who's in the race of her life.  Fausta Manners first shared her story through our "Talk Story" lines. She's battling a rare cancer and needed help paying for her life-saving medication.Members of the sailing club invited Fausta and her family to dinner at Haleiwa Beach Park Friday night. And they had a big surprise for her. They hoist their sails and tighten their lines.Final preps for the 100 mile ocean crossing from Oahu to Kauai for the first time they meet a Haleiwa woman in a different race"Thanks for making our race so special," said Manners.  "Thank you for having me."Team members double-check their canoes, then gather together."To help a woman I saw a news story about Fausta has cancer," said organizer Terry Galpin.Fausta Manners needs expensive medication to keep her alive. "Because her hard working husband Derrick makes too much money at eight dollars an hour Medicare wasn't going to pay for her medication and that is wrong."When I found out the medication wasn't going to be paid for anymore it was heartbreaking because we couldn't afford it," Manners told us.Club members contribute more than two thousand dollars."We have made a donation to pay for several months of her drug medication which came from you guys," said Galpin.  "Then the hard work of other people we have a big surprise."A gift coordinated through Donna Kahakui.  She contacted a friend whose drug company contacts on the mainland could not turn their backs on Fausta. "Actually it looks like your medical needs will be met by the pharmaceutical company so instead of having to worry about it," said Donna Kahakui, a supporter of Manners."God made it possible and you folks reached out to me," Manners told the crowd.  "I don't know any of you."The drug company Roache has already sent a 90 day supply.

"This is why we do what we do to help people so let's everybody have a good time I'm so glad you get to meet Fausta," Gilpin told everyone.

Aloha ocean ohana,

I wanted to share with you some photo's from our night tonight. Uncle Mike kidnapped Joe from the rehab hospital, Noah's sister and Mom got Noah in the car and we all headed over to Uncle Mike and Patty's house for a spur of the moment HSCA hero dinner. To see Noah and Joe together was an extremely emotional  moment for everyone present. Both of them told each other how the other had been on their minds, how each was inspiring the other to get better. All present shed a few tears as we witnessed the exchange of words between these two strong men who, on the outside were visibly  wounded, but inside were still  ocean warriors. Those of us who were blessed enough to be there and witness the two of them exchanging words, and hugs, saw first hand the definition of  "a man" , a human being. We witnessed true compassion, strength and , brotherhood.

It was AMAZING. Watching the two of them together reminded me of what this time of the year is suppose to be about. It isn't about presents, or holiday decorations, ..it's about life, love and family. Two men who inspire me and everyone else, two men who show us incredible courage. As much as we thought our purpose tonight was to make them feel better...it was the opposite, as they made everyone of us feel better about our selves. This was not a pity party. I  witnessed what love and friendship is about.

I saw the boys helping Joe and Noah, I saw gentle men  expressing their love for one another. Lifting Joe into his wheelchair, holding a NON alcoholic beer up to his mouth, cutting Noah's steak in small pieces so he could eat it.  I saw PRIDE. I saw both Noah and Joe accepting their help without hesitation. I saw REAL MEN.

Although there were a few tears, the evening was filled with laughter,  tremendous joy and gratitude. Uncle Mike took Joe back to the rehab hospital, and Noah went back home, both will endure months of recovery time. Failure is not in either of their nature, only success. Keep the letters, cards, and phone calls coming. They both are feeding off our energy. Noah's fund is still opened and Joe's should be opened tomorrow. I will email you his information as soon as I get it. Mahalo to all of you who have made donations. So far we have raised enough money for Noah, he wont have to worry about his rent or other personal expenses for 6 months! Lets do the same for Joe!!

Much love AND Aloha to you all,
